Who else loves a high end mascara, but can’t keep up with the high price tag? I’m on a mission to find an affordable dupe for Urban Decay’s Perversion Mascara, currently reigning unchallenged as my all time favourite mascara. Let’s face it, nothing says “millenial desperately attempting to adult” quite like giving up on all your luxuries to eventually scrape together a deposit for a mortgage. So when I spotted CYO’s The Thick of It Mascara, I was certainly intrigued.
CYO is one of several affordable brands Boots has recently added to its arsenal, and it’s been one I’ve heard mentioned many times on YouTube. It was the large, thick wand that looked so similar so Urban Decay’s, along with the £6 price tag and cute brightly coloured cardboard packaging that caught my eye. It’s even available in five different shades, although the tiny Boots near my work only had it in black.
The Thick of It mascara comes in a simple, matte black tube, which I personally find very elegant for such an affordable option. The first time I used it, I was surprised by how dry the formula felt compared to other mascaras I’ve tried before. I even wondered if I had managed to pick up a tube which had already been opened, but there was so much selotape on the box that I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the case.
CYO promises it will give you healthy, voluminous lashes, with a long lasting, no smudge finish. Does it deliver on it’s promises? I took these points from the Boots website, to see if I agree with them.
Creates a full lash effect
I find that The Thick of It Mascara does give my eyelashes a nice fluffy look, which reminds me a little of mink lashes, just without the dramatic length. While this is a pretty effect, it doesn’t actually add much extra volume to my lashes despite it’s name, perhaps because the formula is so dry..
Curls, lifts & separates lashes
I can’t say I have noticed that much separation. I suppose that, as once again the formula is pretty dry, it doesn’t clump as much as other mascaras I have tried. This is a plus, as it means I don’t need to use another spoolie to separate the clumps, but it’s nothing to get overly excited about.
As for the curling and lifting part, I’m definitely giving it points there: I have naturally curly lashes, which means I never need to use a lash curler. What I’ve found since I started using The Thick of It mascara is that my lashes are pushed so far back that I actually struggle to get my false lashes on! It’s been giving me flashbacks of my first attempts at putting lashes on, when I would accidentally catch my real lashes, and fold the under the lash band… whoops. Anyway, my guess is that if you are someone who uses lash curlers, then you will probably find that this mascara holds them in place pretty well.
Does buildable mean using several coats of mascara without any risk of clumping? As we’ve already established, that is the case with this mascara. On the other hand, if by buildable they mean layering the mascara to get more of it’s effects… then no.
Seriously, no matter how much product I use, I just can’t increase the effects of this mascara! So I would argue that it is not buildable, not matter how little it may clump.
I can’t say I pay that much attention to how long lasting my mascara is; that’s something I normally reserve to my foundation. As long as it doesn’t end up halfway down my face during the day, that’s good enough for me. The Thick or It mascara doesn’t seem to smudge or flake very much, and is still pretty much in place when I get home from work, so I guess it gets a point there too.
So while I do seem to agree with most points about this mascara, you may notice a certain lack of enthusiasm in my responses. I mean, ok, for a start, it is mascara, it isn’t going to be as exciting as an eyeshadow palette or a highlighter. But it does feel nice when you find a mascara that really gives your lashes impact, and this one just didn’t.
If you’re after a more natural looking mascara, I feel like this one may work for you, or for something to use every day. I’m not mad at it, considering it was only £6, but I won’t be picking it up again (I may in fact already have my sights set on another one).
